The use of social media platforms among children and teenagers has risen over the last few years. Today, young adults spend a considerable amount of time perusing through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram which reduces their face-to-face interactions (Mesch 389). The growth of technology has made it possible for people to keep in touch from different parts of the world. Regardless of the immense benefits associated with these interactions, concerns have come up about the resulting adverse social outcomes arising from the excessive use of social media among young adults. Research has shown that spending too much time on Facebook and twitter is associated with a higher risk for alcohol and substance abuse, detrimental mental health effects such depression as a result of cyberbullying and exposure to content that is developmentally inappropriate (Whitaker and Kowalski 15; Lin et al. 323). As such, a balance has to be created to ensure that young people use social media constructively to limit the negative effects associated with the practice. The purpose of the current research, therefore, is to determine the effectiveness of strategies used by parents and guardians in reducing the detrimental effects of social media usage among children and young adults.
