Major Causes for Regional Instability in the Middle East and Recommendations
Introduction
The Middle East is a regional block comprising of 15 countries that include Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Israel, Syria, among others. Majority of the nations in the Arab-dominant area are technically at war with each other or have previously been involved in such conflicts (Backer et al. 44). Though the contours of war may be country-specific, common causes of disagreement are related to shifting power dynamics in the region, skyrocketing arms sales, and historical conflicts. Diplomacy, refined rules on the arms trade, and recommitting the Arab League and GCC to peace brokering are some of the strategies that may restore tranquillity in the Middle East.
Shifting Power Dynamics in the Region
Previously, the majority of the countries in the Middle East collaborated to deny the U.S. significant military presence in the area. Notably, Iran and Syria have for many years been united in opposing Israel's attempt to establish itself as the regional power. They believe the country is a proxy of the United States in the Arab world so that it can pursue its geopolitical goals (Looney 365). Many experts assert that Iran had a negligible role in the initial civil crisis in Syria and Yemen. Nevertheless, it is doubtless that the state has openly expressed interest to exploit the subsequent political fractures and sectarian splits in these countries. Therefore, concerned by these developments, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arabs Emirates appear to be working closely to suppress its potential for dominance in Middle East affairs. Moreover, the three allied nations are cooperating on one side with the U.S., while Iran is assisting Syria's army alongside Russia. With the Arab nations refusing to partner in finding solutions to conflicts affecting them, the Middle East is likely to remain a disintegrated region.
