The growing awareness of the failed mass incarceration in the United States is an eye-opener to any nation that would have implemented the same policy. The U.S. has the largest incarceration rate in the world (Wagner & Rabuy 17). However, there is an evident difference in imprisoned populations based on race. The racial and ethnic disparity in American prisons has been a significant mark of a failed justice system. The majority of people in prisons are people of color including African Americans and Hispanics. Most people suspects are sentenced at the state level instead of the federal level where racial bias and reliance on unreliable policies resulting in discrepancy (Mauer 3). This practice has created collateral consequences including housing instability, employment restrictions, stigma, family interference, and disenfranchisement. The generalization of people of color’s convictions in some jurisdictions has created racially disparate policies. The concentration of poverty and incarceration in some black neighborhoods formulates beliefs and practices in imprisonments regardless of the African American suspects’ crime (De Giorgi 4).
