Introduction
Incompatibility is a term used to refer to a state where two people or substances cannot live together or coexist harmoniously. People or substances which share some common features and which can coexist are said to be compatible. Incompatibility is a common term in medical practice, especially during blood transfusion or organ transplant. For example, donated blood must be compatible with the blood of the patient who is receiving the transfusion. The transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) is the most common procedure undertaken during the hospitalization process. Conditions that call for blood transfusion include by not limited to symptomatic anaemia, acute sickle cell trait, and acute blood loss of not less than 30% of the volume of blood. The blood transfusion in this process is mainly undertaken with an aim of boosting the oxygen delivery to the body. Therefore, in such conditions, patients often have deficiencies in their body circulation systems in which some organs are deprived of essential requirements including oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide, among other toxic materials. Such materials, if no excreted can also be a source of problems to the body and so the need to ensure sufficient blood flow to all parts of the body. Unfortunately, there have been occurrences in which the blood of the donor becomes incompatible with that of the recipient. This has the potential of causing catastrophic effects on the affected individuals if appropriate action is not taken. In most cases, red blood cells are involved and so one of the ways in which this problem is eliminated or put under control is the clearance of these incompatible cells. This paper presents a number of ways and their accompanying mechanisms by which the incompatible red blood cells are cleared from the body. Seven mechanisms will be covered which will include:[Chassé M, McIntyre L, Tinmouth A, Acker J, English SW, Knoll G, Forster A, Shehata N, Wilson K, van Walraven C, Ducharme R. Clinical effects of blood donor characteristics in transfusion recipients: protocol of a framework to study the blood donor–recipient continuum.
