THE EFFECTS OF NOTE TAKING ON STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Introduction
Disability can be defined as a physical condition or mental condition that limits a person’s activities or movements. Disability comes in many forms, and it doesn’t choose who or when to present itself. It knows no race or ethnic backgrounds. The research that I am are going to undertake mainly consists of the blinds in 11th Grade students trying to fit in with their peers and keeping up with social standards without having to feel left out, in this case, study will focus on blindness and challenges they face (Reeve, 2013) .Over the years, blind students have become more vulnerable to assistances with many making several institutions to recruit other students in helping them move around new environments and help them adjust despite their inability. It should be remembered that disability is not the end of everything.
Problem statement
A blind person is someone who is visually impaired. In high school, an 11th grader will face challenges due to the fact that he/she is a special needs student in a school whereby everyone else has all their sense and leading normal lives. 75% of the periods that a special needs student is usually utilized or rather wasted due to preferential treatments they get from others. Then 25% is spent on their studies as well as socializing with others. How does this affect them? Major setbacks arise when they sit in classes with others who aren't visually impaired so that they can get the same quality education as others (Reeve 2013). With that in mind, every visually impaired student has to record lecturers notes in order to translate them into Braille for them to have a future reference in studying. This would mean taking time and really sacrificing their social lives for the chances for better life in future.
The teacher on other hand can sacrifice his/her time to prepare notes in Braille form for them to be able to participate actively in the rest of the students. In subjects like Math and Sciences, it typically proves hard for them to cope up. This highly requires both visual and mental clarity to tackle them with ease. According to most studies conducted, it has proved that visually impaired persons have a high aptitude for subjects that require a lot of mental focus as opposed to sight. The other issues that will affect them are the fact that some normally students bully and take advantage of them. Also, the use of equipment for blind students in class also distracts other students in class thus having a difficult time in mingling with them freely during class hours.
Objectives of the study
These are some of the objectives of the study:
To determine the current methods used by teachers to teach blind students
To establish ways in which efficient note taking strategies could be achieved
To determine teachers perceptions in adopting the new strategies to attain excellent performance for students with disabilities
Research Questions
These are some of the questions the study seeks to answers from the objectives:
What are the current methods used by teachers to teach blind students?
How do we achieve the most efficient note taking strategies for students with disabilities?
What are the teachers' perceptions on how to adopt the new strategies to achieve excellent performance for students with disabilities?
Literature Review
Blindness is viewed as the most feared affliction because sight is one of the most important senses (Azevedo and Aleven, 2013). Blindness indeed has been around since history was recorded and most of this cases arose during the world wars and it became a societal concerns after world war 2. During such wars the veterans couldn't continue with their service since they lost what is most dear to them is the gift of sight. Rehabilitation was offered to them and this would go hand in hand with psychological help due to the fact they were adjusting to new living life (Ferguson, 2014). It would become increasingly difficult for them to survive.
While adjusting to this new life, it, was somewhat felt to be impacted by beliefs and supervision which was mainly held and advocated by the individual and the cultural belief he fought so valiantly to uphold (Catanese ,2014). There a lot of stereotypes in the world who believe that blind persons feel shame anger it should be known that the world has over a million blind persons happy with who they are. There are so many foundations that support and nurture the growth of these persons (Catanese, 2014). They live wondering what other people think about blindness. Blindness has been misunderstood over time and mainly because of those who have suffered the impairment have experienced denial and psychological trauma (Malouff and Schutte, 2014).
We may also need to understand the plight of our brothers and sisters who are blind, organizations have come up over the years to help curb discrimination against them. It needs to be understood that living with visual impaired is nothing like the sighted individuals perceive it (Fergusson, 2014). It is hard for a normal person cannot imagine a life without having to drive, see the movies they love, see the person they hold most dear.
Braille has revolutionized the world of the bind this has helped them get in touch with current affairs and the latest trending items globally (Azevedo and Aleven, 2013). This has been achieved through the help technologies which are specially designed for suitability of their needs. There has been analysis over the years that many losses psychological security basic skills communication and mostly appreciation of what is truly beautiful came about from the realization of the fact that blindness in some way made people feel like they have nothing to live for.
We can consent to the fact that blindness can be rectified, in the sense that special recording devices can be out in place to assist the blind persons. There has been a successful robotic eye transplant that was done and the results were remarkable though his vision wasn't fully restored he could see pixilated information that was been transmitted(Felicia, 2013). Over the years, people with low visions have been given special consideration blind and over the years training and countless assessments of specialization have been done to help them be highly effective. There is much about this diverse group but for that to happen more data and research has to be conducted.
