ABSTRACT:
Neonatal and Maternal Mortality rates in Somalia are amongst the highest in the world, one out of every 12 women dies due to pregnancy related causes (Maternal Mortality Rate is 732 deaths of mothers for 100,000 live births). Poor ANC seeking trends and high defaulter among the few who attend was observed in Somalia more so in Jowhar district. The timing of the first antenatal care visit is paramount for ensuring optional health outcomes for women and children and it is recommended that all pregnant women initiate antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy. It is against this above back ground and problem that the researcher set out to assess contextualized determinants of antenatal care seeking trends in Jowhar district of Somalia. The determinants to be explored include, level of awareness of ANC services and it is significance, socio-economic factors, health facility level factors, and obstetric history factors. The study might be significant to several stake holders including women of child bearing age, health care agencies and ministry of Health Somalia. The study will be carried out in Jowhar district of Somalia amid limitations, delimitations and assumptions. Several literatures on contextualized determinants reviewed and research gaps identified. Conceptual frame work is tabulated showing relationship between independent and dependent variables. The research methodology will be qualitative and design will be community based cross sectional case study which will be qualitative and interactive. The target population will be pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and health care providers and management in Jowhar town and sample size of 366 individuals (357 mothers and 9 Key informants). This study will combine both probability (two stage cluster sampling and simple random sampling for PLWs) and non-probability (purposive sampling for key informant). The research instruments will be structured interview. The study will be tested for validity and reliability. Approval permit from all concerned stake holders and consent from participants will be sourced prior to the study. Data will be analysed using descriptive statistics or narrative descriptions according to the theme of the study. The research will be done in ethical manner and with integrity including consideration of participant’s privacy, respect and confidentiality.
