Pyrolytic Synthesis of Microporous Biochar from Bamboo (Research Proposal Sample)
This was a concept note where the student was trying to identify a research topic to do a proposal on. The concept note puts forward the likelihood of using biochar from bamboo plant to remove emerging pollutants in our water systems such as pharmaceutical active ingredients that are actually the wastes from the drugs we take. The biochar is a powerful adsorbent which has the capacity to rid these ApI's.

Problem statement and justification.
Emerging contaminants are natural or synthetic pollutants that have not always been commonly monitored but bear the potential and risk of entering the environment and bring about adverse ecological and human health effects. One notorious source of these emerging pollutants is the pharmaceutical industry. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are sometimes not fully broken down in the body and are excreted either partially broken down or in original form (Verlicchi et al 2010). These APIs have adverse effects to both human and aquatic ecology. For instance the presence of antibiotics in water sources leads to acute toxicity to fish and benthic species
