Operational Definition of terms
Preterm Birth Live birth at a gestation of less than 37 weeks or up to and including 36 weeks and 6 days starting from the date of onset of last menstrual period.
Very preterm: live birth at gestation of 28 weeks to less than 32 weeks
Moderate preterm: Live birth at gestation of 32 weeks to less than 34 weeks.
Late preterm: Live births at gestation of 34 weeks to less than 37 weeks.
Risk factors: This is something that increases a person’s chance of developing a disease and condition.
Maternal factors in relation to preterm birth: These are conditions that contribute to
occurrence of premature labour and delivery e.g. pre-eclampsia, APH.
Sociodemographic factors in relation to preterm birth: They are situations that
contribute to the development of conditions that eventually contribute to preterm birth. E.g
