The WHO constitution stipulates that every human being, despite their location, has a right to the highest achievable standard of health (Gruskin et al., 2017). When states begin to view health as a human right, they are inspired to create laws that target to provide timely, affordable, acceptable as well as quality healthcare. That, in turn, helps them to provide the underlying health determinants like clean water, food, sanitation, housing, gender equality, and health-related education. A health approach that is guided by human rights necessitates that health policies prioritize those that are furthest behind to attain equity. Thus, it is quite clear that human rights issues impact public health. The following excerpt expounds on how human rights issues affect public health.
For standardization and equity, the right to health should not be enjoyed based on a person’s race, status, age, or ethnicity (Tucker et al., 2019). In case there is any discrimination, states are required to redress any law that creates such a scenario. Meaningful participation is also required when creating rights-based health policies. That means national stakeholders, including non-governmental agencies, should be involved in every phase: assessment, planning, actualization, monitoring, and evaluation. The right to health as a human right is agreed upon and respected internationally. The recognized principles that guide the right to health are inseparable from other rights. Thus, for the right to health to work, other human rights such as the right to food, education, housing, work, participation, and information have to be respected (Gruskin et al., 2017).
In conclusion, lack of attention or violation of human rights has severe health consequences. Implicit or overt discrimination in the creation of policies and delivery of health services in any healthcare setting acts as a significant hindrance to health services. That, in turn, leads to poor quality care for those that are affected. Thus, stat
