China Taiwan Relations History Term Paper Research (Term Paper Sample)

Instructions:

You are the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Your office receives word that China is just hours away from attacking Taiwan. The number of casualties could be in the thousands and the Chinese military is on the verge of occupying the island.
China’s power has grown in recent years, so, too, has the risk of war with the United States. Under President Xi Jinping, China has increased its political and economic pressure on Taiwan and built military installations on coral reefs in the South China Sea, fueling Washington’s fears that Chinese expansionism will threaten U.S. allies and influence in the region. U.S. destroyers have transited the Taiwan Strait, to loud protests from Beijing. American policymakers have wondered aloud whether they should send an aircraft carrier through the strait as well. Chinese fighter jets have intercepted U.S. aircraft in the skies above the South China Sea. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has brought long-simmering economic disputes to a rolling boil.
Your job is to advise the president on what actions the United States should take in order to defend it's ally Taiwan. What will you convince the president to do? Is a peaceful solution a possibility?

China Taiwan Relations
A critical evaluation of the cross-strait relations shows that Taiwan is strategically important to the United States (Shambaugh, 2008). In particular, China’s control of Taiwan would facilitate it to effectively control its operations in the South China Sea. Koopman (2016) observes that China will also be able to assert both its maritime and territorial claims in the South China Sea even more aggressively against Brunei, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia. It is also essential to point out that if China had effective control of Taiwan, it would easily have access to the Pacific through the deep waters of Taiwan. Thus, from a military and naval perspective, China cannot be allowed to have effective control of Taiwan because this would be a serious threat to the interests of the United States in in Northeast and Southeast Asia. In this regard, and based on the current situation, the United States has to take urgent measures that focus on preventing China from attacking Taiwan. Since there is no enough time to set up negotiations, the immediate action that President Trump should take is to call President Xi Jinping and request him to order his troops to stand down and subsequently, agree on the modalities for a negotiation. However, when making this request, President Trump should make it clear to President Xi Jinping that the request to withdraw his troops also comes with a condition. Specifically, President Trump should being to President Xi Jinping’s attention that should he continue with the attack, the United States will not have any other option other than use its military power to protect Taiwan from China’s unlawful aggression. In the event that President Xi Jinping’s fails to honor this request and proceed to attack Taiwan, President Trump is strongly advised to use the military intervention to safeguard her ally from further damage.
