The History of Somalia
The name of the country I am choosing is Somali which is located at the Horn of Africa. Prior to Somali falling under colonial rule, it was referred to as the Somali Democratic Republic ("Central Intelligence Agency", 2021). Its capital city is referred to as Mogadishu and is found on the Indian Ocean north of the Equator. Mogadishu has never changed its name and has always been regarded as a port town due to its location ("Central Intelligence Agency", 2021).
Somali occupies a strategic geographical location as it is located between countries of Southwest Asia, various Arabian countries and Sub Saharan Africa ("Central Intelligence Agency", 2021). This nation can be described as an area of geographical extremes. Due to its climate being dry and hot, its inhabitants have had to resort to severe economic survival tactics.
The landscape is comprised of semiarid and savanna thorny bushes. Their coastline is mountainous in nature especially in the north with well-defined river valleys ("Central Intelligence Agency", 2021). Apart from that, the country is relatively flat which allows for free movement of livestock and the nomads.
At the turn of the middle of the 19th Century, Somalia became the subject of competition between France, Italy and Great Britain (Ahad, 2019). To the north of its territories, Egypt was also staking a claim and afterwards Ethiopia also joined the fray. In 1839, the British created a coaling station at Aden which is found along the northern coast of Somalia (Ahad, 2019).
