Introduction
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence people in order to achieve a vision of an organisation or the goals set by an organisation. The influence may be formal like providing managerial skills into an organisation. Leadership is important and also plays a pivotal role in any organisation or company, regardless of the organisation’s size. The leadership can be informing of a single individual in a business or even in a big organisation of Multination Corporation. For any organisations to achieve their gaols, leadership is important in achieving. Leadership also helps in managing the organisations employees.
For the success of an organisation a strong leader is needed. Different leaders have different traits which describes them this is the reason of coming out with traits theories which describes the leader’s personal qualities and his/her characteristics.
Leaders can also be trained to introduce leadership qualities in them and selecting right people in leadership. It leads to introduction of behavioural theory of leadership which the behaviour of leaders is highlighted and differentiated leaders who are able to lead. The leader’s behaviour can be described in different dimensions which are initiating structure and consideration. Whereby, in initiating structure a good leader can define and structure his or her role in leadership in order to attain the organisation’s goals. It involves managing the fellow workers in attaining the organisations goals. While in consideration, the persons work relation is characterised by the mutual trust and the respect to employees in an organisation. A good leader is the one that can help his/her fellow employee with their problems and can handle their ideas with a lot of respect. Employee-oriented leadership is the same as consideration while the leadership oriented by production is same as initiating structure (Ancona, Malone, Orlikowski, & Senge, 2007).
Most people tend to admire tough minded leaders who are able to revive a fallen company to it high productive stage. However, the leaders are mostly dismissed when the organisation heads to stability are when the organisation is stable. In Fiedler contingency model, proper leadership style enhances good performance of a group. In Fiedler, the individual’s basic leadership style is the one that is a key factor in leadership success in achieving the goal of a company.
Leader member exchange theory was also formulated whereby it argues that due to the time pressure the leaders are able to establish the relationship with small groups of their followers. The individual in these groups are hence trusted and also these members gets a lot of leadership attention hence being more likely to receive the special privileges present. In the theory, relationship must be invested by both the followers and the leader. The leader’s rewards the employees whom they want to close linkage hence punishing those with whom they do not whereby it induces the theory (Goleman, & Boyatzis, 2008).
There exists also charismatic and transformational leadership which are the contemporary leadership theories. In the theories, leaders are seen as individuals who are mandated in inspiring followers through their words, ideas and also behaviours. There is also charismatic leadership whereby it’s believed that individuals are born with the traits to make them charismatic Individuals. But some research experts believe that some individuals can be trained to show the charismatic traits or behaviours. These charismatic individuals actually have the ability of influencing their followers. The charismatic leaders also do have their dark sides whereby some of them lets their person goals to override the goals and objective of the organisation hence leading to failure of the organisation or organisation not reaching its goals in the process. Success mostly depends on vision and the situation of leaders hence charismatic not being the best answer in leadership but it’s effective. In transformational leadership, the leaders inspire the followers to transcend them self for the betterment or prosperity of an organisation (Kerr, & Jermier, 1978).
