Psychology is a branch of science that studies mental processes and human behavior that existed in the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations. In the 1970s, psychology was broken into various independent branches. One of them is academic psychology which uses scholarly and scientific research to understand human cognition and behavior (Travis, 2018). Educational psychologists who work in learning institutions have addressed significant problems that impair learners from achieving their academic goals. They help students cope with emotional burdens and behavioral or learning difficulties. Academic psychologists have many opportunities away from the teaching and learning atmosphere. They have vast opportunities to serve the community, for example, by helping in researching social traits and issues in controlled group experimentation (Dekker et al., 2020). They also take part in studying cross-cultural patterns and assist in anthropology research. Academic psychology has helped humanity address significant challenges it faced in the education sector. The field has improved the teaching and learning experiences that have improved academic performance by addressing the varied needs of students.
Benefits of Academic Psychology on the Teaching and Learning Environment
Academic psychology is concerned with studying human behavior and interactions in educational situations. It focuses on principles, factors, techniques, and methods related to multiple aspects of students' growth and development. It is concerned with fostering active and effective teaching and learning (Travis, 2018). Academic psychology has redefined and refined the learning environment by making the classroom a social platform that has enabled the exchange of ideas and healthy discussions to benefit the teacher and students and the general society at large. The teaching and learning environment was characterized by less emotional and cognitive support in the recent past. The learning processes were not majorly student-centered but rather aimed at the learning processes (Tomlinson, 2018).
