Social Model Theory of Disability (Term Paper Sample)
This paper looks at the assertions by various proponents in the field of psychology on how the society contributes to dissability. The propoents argue that no humman is limited and that a persons dissability is a social construct. The psychologists asserts that the exclusion and denial of people born with certain abnormalities is what label them disabled. The study therefore, suggests the removal of barriers created by the society on people living with disability.

Social Model Theory of Disability
Mike Oliver developed the social model theory in 1991. He posits that people with impairment are disabled by way of the actions of the society. In this theory, all people are different and completely unique from another. Every individual has exceptional circumstances that have to be dealt with by the community. Some individuals develop while others are born with impairment; therefore, if the society does not meet their needs, then it is the choice and attitude of the society that they are disabled (Oliver, 2017). The structure and the philosophy of society further exclude children born with a disability and deny their sexuality, race, gender, and their fundamental rights as human beings. According to Oliver 2017, there is no kind of limitations on individuals, which causes the problem. However, it is the failure of the society to avail proper services and adequately ensure that the needs of people living with a disability are entirely taken into consideration in its social set up.
Vic Finkelstein asserts that physical disability is entirely social. He posits that’s when social stumbling blocks are eliminated, and then the disability is gone (Levitt, 2017).
