Unethical Psychological Experiments Through History
Psychological experiments are essential as they help in understanding what makes people behave in the manner they do. Nonetheless, other psychologists have gone in relation to their studies and research in unusual way. Sometimes the methods used are dubious. The findings obtained by these researchers are essentially important as they serve the purpose of increasing the amount of knowledge concerning the behavior of human beings with regard to the surrounding. While the research carried out are important, ways that some psychologists used in testing the theories were realized to have overstepped the ethical limits and have been brutal. Individuals involved in these studies have not escaped without a scratch. Indeed, many have suffered long lived emotional injury. Among the psychology experiments that undoubtedly overstepped ethical lines include, the Monster Study of 1939 by University of Iowa, Emma Eckstein’s treatment from Sigmund Freud, The Standford Prison Experiment by Philip Zimbardoand the David Reimer treatment on failed circumcision among others. The paper herein seeks to give detailed information concerning the doctors, patients involved and the outcome of the experiments carried out.
Unethical Experiments in Psychology
The Monster Study of 1939 involved 22 orphans who lived in Davenport, Iowa. The experiment subjects for the two researchers, Wendell and Tudor were the orphans (Halvorson, 2009). The research was on stammering but no one would ever like the way it was carried out. These orphans were divided into two groups whereby members of one group were allowed a positive speech therapy and were praised for their fluency in speaking CITATION Col13 \l 1033 (Colman, 2013). On the other hand, the other set of orphans received unhelpfulspeech therapy and they were demeaned for their imperfection in speaking. Later in the end, the orphans in the other group with normal speech, even before the onset of the experiment that brought speech difficulties, were allegedlypreserved for the entire part of their lives. The researchers however never published the findings of their study because they feared that they would be compared to other individual experimenters in the midst of the Nazis CITATION Can14 \l 1033 (Canter, 2014).
