The society has defined specific gender roles and responsibilities and demands that both genders meet the stereotypes emanating thereof. Women are expected to be submissive, quiet and attractive while men are required to exhibit strength, independence and athleticism. The society calls for compliance with for the gender orders. Failure to adhere to the societal expectations for the genders makes on to be ridiculed. Such incidences include girls playing football or weight lifting. Despite these stereotypes having stood for century, with progress in time, people have challenge the positions. One of the areas that has received intense pressure is in sports and physical activities. Comparing the present period and the past, it is evident that women have firmly cemented their place in the sports industry. They have been able to challenge the barriers and restrictive stereotypes about their appearances, abilities and participation in certain sports through their increased participation in sports. In this paper, I will compare two female personalities from the early 1970s and the present time to understand their experiences under different contexts.
