Abstract
From the numerous theories that came about which sought to explain organized crime, one theory serves as a pioneer in how the phenomenon of organized criminality undergoes, the rational choice theory. Exploring rational choice theory and its implication on organized crime, this paper is a presentation of both the strengths and limitations of rational choice theory as a lens to see and assess organized criminality. This paper presents a discussion on how rational choice theory can be utilized as a source of numerous policies that could substantiate the pursuit against organized criminality.
Rational Choice Theory: Tackling Organized Crime
Explaining organized crime has been a pursuit of various field from the humanities to the social sciences. Numerous theories have presented to provide a clearer view of how and why crime is conducted – presenting the thought-process that came about with these labeled criminal actions. From new theories that sprung like the illegal enterprise theory, the protection theory, the social network approach theory, and the alien conspiracy theory to the more classic ones like the biological positivism, Strain theory, and differential association theory (Lyman, & Potter, 2007), one theory serves as a pioneer in looking at organized criminality, the rational choice theory. Mostly labeled as limited in its application, this paper presents an exploration on how this theory was able to present criminality and how its ideas were able to suggest numerous policies that reduced criminality.
