Character Analysis of the Protagonist in Araby by James Joyce
Introduction
The short story Araby is written by the Irish Writer James Joyce and represents the psychological story of the young boy as he grows from a naïve boy to adulthood. The main concept of the short story is the process of maturity of the young boy form his first love experience his overall emotions and feelings. Thus, this analytical essay aims at analyzing the character of this boy and how his character leads to the overall development of symbolism and allusions.
Characters of the Young Boy
James Joyce through the narrator portrays the boy in the short story as not only being kind and shy but also a sensitive human being although he is weak in character. The feelings of the boy lead him to falling in love with a girl who was sister to his friend Morgan. The character of the boy is depicted by the author through his behavior, emotions, feelings, actions and thoughts. According to Joyce et al (155) the young boy lives with his uncle and Aunt in some “uninhabited house of two storeys” which were far apart from the rest of the neighbors.
