The 1850s marked a turning point for the United States, with divisions rife over political and constitutional discourse. Georgia took a stand to impede the concerted efforts of the Southerners to promote slavery as a constitutional right. Additionally, it displayed its political prowess in calling for dialogue and averting war during the unrest.
Slavery was at the center of attention during this historical period, and there existed a longstanding dispute between Southerners and Northerners in the Union. On the one hand, southern slave owners insisted on fugitive slave laws that were to be extremely stringent. The Northerners, on the other hand, pushed for the abolishing of slavery, more so in the Columbia District.
