The Sociological Significance of the Movie Wedding Crashers
Introduction
The Wedding Crashers film was broadcasted in the year 2005 with a cast that included Vince, Owen, Isla, Will and Christopher (GENDERBODIESMOVIES 14). The movie features Vince together with Jeremy as lovers of wedding crashing whose purpose is to make love with plenty of the women they come across in weddings. They happened to attend the wedding of the daughter of a government official by the name William Cleary. It is during this wedding that they fall in love, and finally, they settle down. Their love and efforts to settle down experienced multiple amusing incidents which ranged from being brutally tackled, homosexually enticed besides being shot in the leg. Despite being an actual nugget of comedy, the movie wedding crashers has multiple social significance to its audience. The paper looks into gender and value concepts of sociology featured in the film.
Gender
The film does not observe gender equality as it favors the men in the function rankings. Throughout the movie, there exist some scenes where the female gender is part of the dialogue and plot, but they do not speak at all, the male gender speaks for them. For instance, when Sack reveals his engagement to Claire while at a dinner, Claire hardly opens her mouth to object or comment on the engagement announcements. Sack forcibly kissed her into silence before she could object nor comment about the statement, Claire also had no idea that she was getting engaged because Sack never communicated the plans to her. Another scene is where Clare and John head off for a bike ride, despite the bike riding being the idea of Claire, John is mandated to tell Jeremy where they headed. Moreover, it is in the same conversation that only John and Jeremy speak even with Claire and Gloria being present. The dialogue ends without the female gender that is Claire and Gloria speaking a word. From the very brief to the major scenes, the female gender is featured as less significant being only a background while the men dialogue in their presence (GENDERBODIESMOVIES 16).
Apart from being left out in the conversation participation, the film also features the female gender as an object under the control of men rather than themselves. The film seems to be misogynistic in the way it features the female gender to that of the male. At the beginning of the movie shows a montage of both Jeremy and John picking up girls at the wedding where they later throw them naked onto a bed. Images like this shown in the film reveals women merely as objects that can be used or moved around at the will of a man’s desire. Moreover, the montage constitutes images of women completely naked or in their underwear being tossed literally on to bed by men. In similar scenes throughout the movie, the female gender seems to be controlled by men, and they do not have freedom of agency or movement for themselves. The passive roles that the film gives the women characters perpetuate the ideas that the male gender merely uses the female gender as objects of less significance other than fulfilling their desires (GENDERBODIESMOVIES 15).
Values
The film has an extensive use of values especially the cultural values of women. In the cultural context, women possess certain values such as being caring and motherly. The film Wedding Crashers uses the feminine touch to portray the caring value of the women. Despite Gloria having a stereotypical dual personality where she seems to be either daringly sex-driven or childishly innocent, there exists a caring personality that plays into her female character (Kerridge 22). Both Clare and Gloria demonstrate caring attitude to the males around them. For instance, when Jeremy is tackled during the football match, Gloria raises to her feet in worry. Gloria also pulls in silence the hunting pellets that stuck in Jeremy’s butt o...
