1. Introduction
Operating systems are now open across platforms. The growing shift to mobility devices (particularly smartphones) and open source systems (developed and edited by community peers) are redefining user experience in several ways considered far-fetched a few years ago. In contrast to commercial systems, open source systems, offered across different platforms, feature new capabilities which, combined by more powerful processing, enable users to experience value-differentiated web- and mobile-based encounters. Two open source operating systems are, for current purposes, of central interest: Andriod and iOS.
In response to emerging peer-to-peer economy cutting across different industries and business activities including development of operating systems, Andriod and iOS, developed by Google and Apple respectively, come to address market gaps in mobility, particularly after Nokia’s loss of market share (and brand equity) for lack of innovation. (The Nokia brand is, for anything, now recognized only for battery durability.) The mobility operating system market, now dominated by Andriod, iOS and Windows, is now defined based on new game rules which cut across development, business, marketing and usability areas.
