PERSONAL STATEMENT
My name is Xi Yen. I have a keen interest in studying Spanish in your highly esteemed university. I grew up in a neighborhood that had a large number of Spanish speaking residents. From a very young age, this fuelled my desire to have an understanding of the language so as to be able to communicate with friends in the neighborhood. However, I have since come to view the language in a different light. It is now not only a means of communication for me, but a greater representation of a culture I would like to explore.
I am currently enrolled in San Antonio College doing a major in Spanish. The Spanish education provided in college has enabled me to be more articulate in the language. It has also equipped me with the confidence to speak Spanish to my Hispanic friends and in Hispanic themed places and restaurants. I am therefore in a position to interact with Spanish speaking individuals living around me better. In pursuit to further my knowledge in this lovely language, I have also visited Mexico. I chose to visit this country as its predominant language of use is Spanish. The experience further horned my understanding of the language. It also gave me a chance to practice what I had been learning in class without difficulty because there was no shortage of people for me to speak Spanish with. I came back from Mexico being a more eloquent Spanish speaker. In addition to this, I currently engage myself in reading Spanish written books, newspapers and websites. I also relish watching Spanish themed operas, films and documentaries and this has furthered my love and knowledge for the language.
Owing to my previous knowledge and exposure to the Spanish language, I believe that I am right for this course. I have a background understanding of this language and this course will enable me to become a fully efficient Spanish speaker, able to interact with Spanish speaking individuals effortlessly. It will also enable me to have a more fulfilling professional life, translating for individuals who have little knowledge in the English language, yet they are primary Spanish speakers. As such, I will be able to deliver my future professional duties with ease and without any misunderstandings or miscommunications.
Being able to study Spanish in your university will also equip me with the ability to work in a variety of countries and regions.
