Paley, C.A., Johnson, M.I., Tashani, O.A., & Bagnall, A.M. (2011). Acupuncture for cancer pain in adults. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Issue 1. Art. No.: CD007753. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD007753.pub2.
Type of article:
Literature review, qualitative research, evidence-based recommendations
What is the purpose of the paper?
Because there existed a shortage in the literature concerning acupuncture for cancer-related pain, the study is carried out to bridge this gap. The authors carry out extensive research on the efficacy of acupuncture in relieving cancer-related pain amongst adults. The scientists embarked on randomised controlled trials to evaluate cases of invasive acupuncture. Previous studies were also excluded from the sample if they were non-randomised trials, abstracts, case reports and letters.
What data do the author/s use to support the hypothesis or purpose?
The authors used data up to October 2010 where a search log was set displaying the databases searched as well as the dates of the searches. The information recorded entailed the author’s details, study design, participants and characteristics of intervention.
Outline the key points identified in the article:
1. The study included a total of 204 participants for the three RCTs.
2. Participants in the two groups were blinded, but the blinding was not successful in the group of ear seeds since seeds were attached using tape. This might have been a source of bias thus favouring the acupuncture groups.
