The research article by Gustavsen, Nayga, & Wu (2016) the existing correlation between parental divorce and the prevalence and incidence of risk behaviors among teenagers. The credibility of the researchers to publish on the topic is well established, with Geir Wæhler Gustavsen having a record 64 publications in different fields, and being a renown research scientist. The researchers applied the propensity score to match the longitudinal data methods that were applied to the estimation of the effects of parent divorce on such behavior as alcohol consumption, binge drinking, use of tobacco and marijuana use as well as the use of hard drugs. The sample included children aged 12 to 18 years and the first phase of the survey and 18 to 24 in the second phase of the study. The results that were collected from the study suggest that that on overall, divorce had an effect of increasing the risk of children engaging in risk behaviors that may extend to criminal behavior. Further, there was an observation from the study that the adverse effects of the parental separation and divorce had a lasting impact that persisted over time. This was more pronounced in the teenage girls. The effects of parental divorce ranged from the psychological to the physical.
