Humans tend to have varied tastes when it comes to almost everything in life. Interestingly, when it comes to weight tastes are different with some preferring to gain while others resent the thought of having to be seen as weighty. For the latter, ample exercise and avoidance of some foods are some of the steps taken. In the end, this category of people suffers from an eating disorder popularly known as anorexia nervosa. Studies have been conducted concerning this condition, and for this essay the focus is on article "Eating Disorder Statistics" (Lask, 2009). This paper intends to have a review of the aforementioned article.
In this article, it is evident that the researcher uses the quantitative method judging from the various characteristics of the said method. Firstly, the researcher states numerically that 91% of the women who took the survey were found to have tried to reduce weight. Gutierrez (2013) states one sign of anorexia nervosa is the obsession with weight control. People who suffer from this will engage in excessive exercise for fear of gaining weight. Secondly, the researcher shows that 10%-15% of the people suffering from this condition are men.
Further proof of the quantitative method being used in this article is the using a wider number of cases and also not in in-depth. In other words, the researcher has conducted the survey not on a small group but rather a wider one. For instance, the research incorporate the adolescents, women, men and went ahead to include even the gays. According to Aguinis (2007) quantitative research method has this as one of its characteristics.
From the article, it could be argued that one of the limitations was the research designs. While the researcher uses the naturalistic observation quite effectively, there is not a very clear overall strategy use in the integration of the data. Aguinis (2007) asserted that in order to have a verifiable and reliable data, a researcher ought to have a strong and clear research design.
Concerning the setting on which the research was done, it is appropriate to conclude that it was naturalistic observation. This kind of setting involves observing the behavior in a particular venue for specific period where such behaviors are likely to occur (Aguinis, 2007). This setting is normally considered costly as well as quite difficult for the observer since one has to remain in a particular place. Conversely, laboratory setting refers to the examination or observation in an environment that is controllable. From the article, the researcher had to spend considerable amount of time in colleges in order to have conclusive data.
