David Entwistles Review of Chapters 8-11 (Book Review Sample)
Instructions:
1. Develop a Summary of the main concepts from Entwistle, Chapters 8-11 in
approximately two pages. Be appropriately concise but also be adequately complete in
your ideas. Prove that you comprehend the main ideas by writing a clear and succinct
summary. The summary is not a commentary or listing of topics but rather a discussion of
the core ideas (main ideas) in the chapters. If you miss the main ideas, you lack an
understanding of the complete message of the chapters. In this Paper: Entwistle Review
Assignment, please make sure that you identify all of the models that Entwistle
discusses. Cite the book in-text (Entwistle, 2015) at least once per paragraph and include
page numbers for direct quotations (Entwistle, 2015, p. 123). As a general rule of thumb,
please limit your direct quotations to no more than three short quotations per written
page. As a graduate student, you are encouraged to use your own voice and tell your
reader what the authors said, rather than using lengthy quotes. Your professor wants to
read what your own summary description of the text is.
2. In your own words, interact (in approximately 2 pages) with the chapters. Appropriate
comments for this part of the Paper: Entwistle Review Assignment should include but
are not limited to your initial response to the chapters, insights you gained from reading
these chapters, other thoughts you have that might further enhance the discussion of your
article, and especially which model best suits yourself and why. Your subjective
comments in this section must be clearly tied to main points from the article, not
peripheral ideas. You are highly encouraged to consider any other information from
previous articles you may have read in previous courses, or in other places you have
encountered information relating to the themes in the article you are reviewing. For
example, does the ACA Code of Ethics have anything to say about the themes being
discussed in your journal article? Are there passages of Scripture that directly relate to the
article? Are there ideas and concepts from previous courses you have taken in your

program here at Liberty or elsewhere that relate to the article you have chosen? You are
encouraged to include them, and make sure you include proper citations and references at
the end of the paper. The best papers from this assignment will be from students who
share other ideas from at least two other academic sources (with proper citations) in this
section, along with Scriptural insight.
3. In your final section (in approximately 1 page) write how you would apply the
information you have learned from this article to a particular counseling situation or to
yourself. You are encouraged to write about how this concept of Entwistle’s models will
impact how you will operate as a professional counselor in the future. Also, consider
other sources that you have encountered in your life up to this point that relate to
Entwistle’s ideas, such as other textbooks, journal articles, Scripture passages, and even
ethical codes such as those in the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) or the AACC Code of
Ethics (2014).
4. Please make sure to include a Reference page and properly cite the Entwistle (2015)
book, along with all other sources of information you cite in your Paper: Entwistle
Review Assignment. All the in-text citations you use in the body of this paper
need to match the reference list.

Summary
The book presents models as daily constructs in people/human lives. It is based on the understanding that issues such as location, number, letters, and time are concepts that use models for revealing information that an individual can express willingly. The constructions of the models differ because they are developed using different concepts and assumptions. Entwistle (2015) holds theological and psychological principles based on this argument. The models that Entwistle (2015) examines include 'Enemies, Colonialists, Spies, Neutral parties, Rebuilders, and Allies.' Each of the above models provides a paradigm that explores the interplay between theology and psychology. They also examine the response of different theorists. For instance, enemies consider them competitors or rivals, while spies use theology for issues such as mental health. As for colonialists, they use psychology for improving and elevating Biblical and scripture perspectives. The focus of the latter is not on psychology. Some religious people believe in the importance of psychology, thus considering it theological. They consider the benefits of psychology despite lacking knowledge of it. Regarding rebuilders, they are urging for the return of psychology to emphasize an issue that the scriptures should teach regarding human nature and comfort. They consider the status of psychology to be a normative subject/discipline. Rebuilders use Biblical origins to trace back psychology. Entwistle (2015) explains that rebuilders are comfortable considering psychology as a religious practice and not science from the secular realm. On the other hand, neutral parties entail distinct disciplines and facets with different methods and beliefs of avoiding confrontation and conflict. They discuss psychology and theology as disciplines with correlations, particularly between their findings. They call for the coexistence and recognition of the two disciplines with respect being accorded to each discipline's boundary. It is based on the understanding that religion has valuable notions while not infringing on the territory of religion. Neutrality helps in accomplishing psychological neutrality. The Allies model depends on the assumptions regarding the existence of the truth from God, which is both in the word of God and God's truth. Entwistle (2015) presents this model as a sovereign subject in the last chapter. The model depends on the unity of truth with Allies cooperating with psychology and theology to help serve individuals. They believe in the distinction of each discipline, with psychology being vital for understanding the human condition. As a method that integrates, it eliminates secular and sacred divisions.
Chapter 8 of Entwistle focuses on comparing the models illuminated above. Entwistle (2015) uses these models to demonstrate individuals' interpretations of the Bible and human beings. Entwistle (2015) concludes the chapter by arguing that constructive critique is integral for humans to discover errors in interpretations within the realms of theology and psychology. The Enemies model dictates that a mutual exclusion exists between theology and psychology. As a result, Entwistle presents this model as a struggle between psychology and spirituality/religion. It is an assertion that emanates from the understanding that the basis of the model is human psychology and human theology. Consequently, it is a paradigm that presents enmity between Christians and psychology that should not unit. Entwistle (2015) facets the above thought as Christian versus secular combatants. Religious perspective is based on the belief that looking for psychological treatment is equivalent to deviating from God. It also depends on the assumption that God often solves all human life problems. Entwistle (2015) cautions against such a method. As for establishing the Spies model, it relies on the basis that if it is not theology, then it is psychology. Its facets are borrowed from other disciplines in the provision of a thesis. Entwistle remarks in chapter ten that psychologists using religious beliefs and behaviors to meet psychological objectives commit theft.
Interaction
The intention of Entwistle (2015) to explore issues related to Christianity and psychology entails providing insights into historical debates associated with beliefs in these two disciplines. Entwistle manages to synthesize and integrate centuries of conflicts between the two subjects objectively. Entwistle (2015) leans towards the Allies model because the model favors integration. Entwistle uses it to address many likely difficulties that integrationists encounter as he seeks to gain additional insight into the concept of integration of the Allies model. He seems to believe that harmonizing the two disciplines may help in obscuring the information emanating from the understanding that the impact of theology on worldview is significant.
Entwistle (2015) discourages the notion of either of the two disciplines being considered supreme. He considers God as the source and epicenter of the truth. Entwistle considers prioritizing not only damaging but also unnecessary. I feel like the explanation conferred to the Allies model resonates with me, even though there could be some contradictions that may not impress me. I respect psychology, including its concepts, just as the model does. But, I also leverage retaining theology. Spirituality through Christianity has always been a significant facet of my belief system. Interestingly, there is some level of obsession with religion/theology in the spy's model, with little focus on the human condition and psychology.
Using religious beliefs, values, and ideas in mental health methods is worth considering. However, I understand that others may view this in the negative. Integrative techniques that entwistle (2015) uses for Christianity and psychology provides more insights about important aspects for the integration process. Christianity practices that seek to improve the human situation instead of encouraging teachings related to religion resonate with that which domestic spies seek to achieve. I opine that mental health providers such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors should comprehend their clients' relationship with God, including the world. It may help these professionals provide high-quality services. Notably, I consider the Allies model as my choice. The integration interpretation from the model helps me comprehend that two ideas can be merged appropriately to accomplish a specific objective. For instance, as a staunch Christian, such an approach will also allow me to praise and worship God. The principles and concepts surrounding the two disciplines (theology and psychology) can help individuals (Christians, as I am) understand God's glory. Comprehending and acknowledging the role of God in the creation of the psychology discipline may be vital in helping people search for information and knowledge. It enables people to contend with the possibility and potential of psychology and theology working together, and professionals in the medical field can use it to improve service delivery. Christian counseling that integrates theology, psychology, and spirituality should be fluid and flexible to the encompassing counseling s...
