Assesssing Vision Loss after Head Trauma Author Affiliation Course Instructor Due Date Assesssing Vision Loss after Head Trauma Sudden vision loss after head trauma is common, but diagnosis in the emergency room is challenging because of the wide range of possible brain and ocular damages, each with different pathophysiology. Also, the patient may lose consciousness or alertness. Nevertheless, an extensive assessment is necessary to identify potential causes of vision loss and accord the necessary emergency intervention where necessary. In this case, the first assessment will involve external inspection to detect signs of intraocular foreign objects or globe tears. Another important assessment will be evaluating Extraocular Movements to determine if the affected eye can follow movements through normal eye movement (Headway Brain Injury Association, 2022). The next assessment involves visual acuity, where a card or newspaper is near the patient to read to determine their eye strength, considering that the patient might have been using glasses before the incident. Additionally, I will assess the patient’s Confrontation Visual Fields by guiding them to count fingers. Lastly, I would assess the pupil to detect any pupillary defect. The potential problems leading to the vision loss include a direct ocular injury resulting from severe head trauma, which sometimes may lead to loss of consciousness. An example of ocular injury or trauma is hyphema which involves clotting blood in the eye interior resulting from a hemorrhage (Simanjuntak et al., 2018). Also, the injury may involve penetration of the ocular causing damage or the presence o9f a foreign object in the eye. These would require an emergent intervention to stop more damage and possibly recover the eyesight. Other less common problems might include a normal ocular appearance but with a bilateral or unilateral loss of vision (Tam & Murray, 2022). This suggests a possible injury to the in...
