Promoting Childhood Immunizations
Since their first introduction, vaccines have immensely contributed to a healthy community. They have prevented the outbreak of infectious diseases such as tetanus, measles, and typhoid. Immunization have been effective to the extent of significantly reducing the fear of contracting vaccine-preventable ailments. Consequently, the number of individuals devaluing the importance of vaccines has risen over time. The increased number of parents excepting their children from the recommended vaccination schedule has become a clinical problem over the last two decades. It is the research problem addressed in the study “Impacting Parental Vaccine Decision-Making” by Amy Zangger Eby.
The study by Eby is significant due to its appeal to ending human suffering and reducing the cost of dealing with disease outbreak epidemics. To show the importance of the study, Eby references the measles outbreak of 2015 in Disney Park. This outbreak ended up spreading to over 18 states and caused suffering to over 150 individuals. Eby (2017) argues that following the vaccination schedule recommended by the CDC could have reduced the number of individuals affected in this case. Additionally, vaccination would have significantly reduced the cost of dealing with this epidemic. As the CDC asserts, vaccination prevention measures are cheaper than treatment measure of infectious diseases.
