Foodborne Illness Outbreak During Summer Camp
According to the research conducted by Virginia Department of Health in the United States of America in 2008, Escherichia coli O157 diseases infects around 78,000 young people. There were high chances of children suffering severe conditions such as uremic syndrome. Besides, the diseases causes illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lower abdominal pain, nausea and fever. These symptoms were seen on people who tested positive for the diseases.
At the time of outbreak, there was a camp that was attended by 1,599 youths. Out of the total number of people who were present at the camp, 538 respondents were used as specimen, out of which, 32 tested positive of the Escherichia coli 0157. Samples for the test were collected from the specimens stool, food leftovers, and environmental samples. It was evident that persons who cooked their meat properly had less cases as compared to those who did not prepare their meat well. For instance, the average time amongst people who tested positive for the diseases was relatively shorter as compared to those who tested negative. Therefore, consuming improperly cooked food at the youth camp in Virginia, facilitated the outbreak of Escherichia coli O157
