Obesity is turning out to be a key health challenge in the globe. Unluckily, Malta lies on the higher end of the range of mean population Body Mass Index (BMI). Family doctors are well positioned to spot cases of obesity as well as offer medication, health education and follow up. They assist in putting off obesity and its problems. This paper looks at the nature of Obesity in Malta with an aim of understanding factors that influence obesity, interventions and actions taken to address this health issue in the country (Preuss et al, 4).

Malta is a small nation situated in the Mediterranean. It has a population of 350,000 people. Lying in Western Europe, it maintains the highest level of obesity. 60% of its population is either obese or overweight. According to the OECD 2012 report, 58% of women and 74% of men in Malta are obese or overweight (OECD, 12).
Health condition
Obesity plays a major role in health conditions. People who are obese risk contracting breathing difficulties, blood pressure, sleep disorders, back problems, diabetes, coronary-heart diseases, hypertension, premature deaths and gastrointestinal complications just to mention a few.
Intervention on program
With quite a huge figure of people being obese in Malta, health intervention programs have been formulated. Fast foods are a direct contributor to the epidemic. People are recommended to eat healthy mainly consumption of vegetables and fruits. Physical exercise is also recommended in order to burn fats and calories in the body

The key determinants to obesity can be categorized into genetic, behavioral such as eating habits and physical activities, social such as social class and smoking status and environmental factors such as lack of facilities e.g. bike paths and safe side-walks.
