The concept of sustainability, which can be defined as the ability to continue with a certain trend indefinitely has gained a lot of importance in the field of business and other professions. This has been the result of people’s desire to continue reaping the benefits accrued from the earth’s resources and the realization of the fact that the world’s resources are limited (Ekins 2002). For example, without proper conservation, the world’s biodiversity can easily be damaged. Such damage could lead to the extinction of some species, which play a major role in the sustenance of human and other life forms. The type of sustainability described above is environmental sustainability. With the development of this concept and its rising importance among society members, many organizations have embarked on ensuring that their operations are sustainable.
Business sustainability can be defined as the coordination and the management of social, financial and environmental demands and issues to enable an organization achieve ethical, responsible and continuous success (Asif, Searcy, Garvare and Ahmad 2011). Many organizations have embarked on sustainability programs as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programs. This research work will benchmark “Liverpool council’s” business sustainability activities against three other organizations.
