Vertical Organizational Structure and Matrix Structure
A vertical organization structure can be defined as organizations that have a chain of management with the CEO at the top. The CEO makes decisions and delegates them downwards to the middle level management for execution in a vertical organization. Information and authority moves from the top downwards in a vertical organizational structure. On the other hand, a matrix organizational structure can be described as a structure that has multiple reporting lines. This means that every person has more than one boss in the organization and has to report to every one of them. Information and authority moves in several directions in a matrix organizational structure. As seen in the above definitions, it is clear that a vertical organizational structure is fundamentally different from a matrix organizational structure. This paper analyzes the differences and similarities between a matrix and a vertical organizational structure and provides suggestions on appropriate changes to make the performance of work more efficient.
