Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of arteries as a result of plaque buildup on the artery walls. It results from the destruction of the endothelium, hence enabling harmful cholesterol to develop in the walls of the artery. The body sends some kind of white blood cell to tidy up cholesterol, although sometimes the cells stall out at the influenced site. This destruction leads to a plaque formation usually made up of cholesterol, calcium, macrophages among other blood substances (Selzman, 2018). With time, the plaque develops up to specific size, after which it stops growing, hence leading to the development of problems on an individual.
The major causes of atherosclerosis are; high blood pressure, smoking as well as other tobacco sources, high intake of cholesterol, disease inflammation such as arthritis or lupus and the resistance of insulin. The main signs and symptoms are chest pains, angina, temporally loss of vision, weak legs or arms, and kidney failure among others. Atherosclerosis is usually transmitted through the gut microbiota transplant.
