Risks of Chemical, Radiological, Biological, and Nuclear Defense Threats
Terrorism causes a dangerous and challenging threat not only to the US, but throughout the world. Guns and bombs were the most plied attack weapons between 1970 and 2018. However, the new terrorist generation is likely to use CBRNE or high-yield explosives capable of causing mass disruptions and casualties. This is due to the need to create widespread panic, produce significant damage to an economy or community, and increase the ability to execute attacks anonymously.
Terrorists would possibly attempt using biological weapons in an attack in Memphis, Tennessee. Bioterrorism involves the intended release of destructive agents to cause illness or kill people, animals, or plants. Such biohazards can include human-modified or naturally-occurring toxins, viral pathogens, bacteria, and fungi. While such agents commonly exist in nature, individuals may alter them to enhance the ability to spread and resist drugs.
Why Bioterrorism could be a more Likely Form of Attack
Biological weapons may be more appealing to terrorists since they are easily acquired and hardly detected. Producing these weapons is also comparatively inexpensive. Their estimated cost is about 0.05% of that of developing a conventional tool with the capacity to cause a similar number of casualties in one square kilometer ("Overview of potential agents of biological terrorism | SIU School of Medicine," 2017). Additionally, bioweapons are simple to disperse and have the potential of causing severe effects. Obtaining delivery systems like spray apparatus from vehicles, boats, or an airplane is relatively easy.
