Genetics and some biological factors determine the susceptibility of a particular population to infections. For instance, the aging population is considered to be at higher risks of diseases as compared to adolescents. The inheritance of specific genes predisposes a particular population to infections and the development of health conditions. Typically, genes for sickle cell anemia get transmitted from one generation to the other. Therefore if one of the parents presents sickle cell traits and the other parent is a carrier, then the offspring are likely to exhibit sickle cell traits. The subsequent generation can inherit the sickle cell gene.
Studies indicate that approximately 2% of total human diseases are attributed to the inheritance of a faulty single gene locus, also referred to as Mendelian disorder (Bortz, 2005). Although single gene defect is a rare condition, there are over 18 000 Mendelian disorders, thus posses a significant impact on the wellbeing of generations. Hemophilia is a single gene trait the causes the abnormality in blood clotting. Failure of the blood to clot due to insufficient or lack of clotting factors leads to excessive loss of blood and thus, deteriorated health. Additionally, chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome, and multifactorial gene disorders also affect individuals’ general health. Multifactorial gene disorder results from the interaction of genes with the environment (Malaspina et al., 2016). For instance, when someone with an underlying genetic disorder is subjected to cancer treatment or has other health conditions such as high blood pressure, then their health is likely to deteriorate. Genetics plays a critical role in the wellbeing of the human population however; they are also interrelated with other health components such as aging.
