Provision of care to individuals from culturally diverse groups is one of the critical challenges facing the country's healthcare system. Research has established that patients of African-American origin and Hispanic origin receive a lower quality of care (Cuevas, O’Brien, & Saha, 2017). One way to improve this is by ensuring the workforce is culturally competent. Cultural competence is "a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes and policies that come together in a system, agency or among professionals that enable that system, agency or profession to work effectively in cross-cultural situations" (Jongen, McCalman, Bainbridge, 2018). As a nurse, I have witnessed several situations where the patient refused to receive treatment because it conflicted with their beliefs, especially Jehovah’s Witness patients.
Recently, I had an encounter with a patient of Hispanic descent. The patient was complaining of fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. He also had yellowish skin. One of the factors that inhibit the treatment of people from culturally diverse groups, such as the patient in question, is language barrier care (Cuevas, O’Brien, & Saha, 2017). Lucky enough, the patient was well educated
