However, the nurses experience various barriers that reduce the progress of advanced practice nursing. In this paper, I will assess those barriers and determine the strategies for addressing them. Among the considerable barriers is the practice of authority restrictions in some states. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) operate based on the laws in their states. Some states give the APRNs full practice authority while others do not give that authority. This barrier is experienced by APRNs who lack full practice authority in their states. Such APRNs have limited authority and may require a collaborative agreement with a physician to provide patient care (Schorn et al., 2022). Lack of full practice authority is a considerable barrier that minimizes the progress of advanced practice nursing because it requires the ability of the APRNs to utilize their skills and knowledge to practice to the full extent of their training and education. The APRNs do not fully use their knowledge to improve patients' health conditions in the states with limited practice authority. To address this barrier, all states must give APRNs full practice authority (Kleinpell et al., 2022). The authority will permit the APRNs to assess the patient's health condition and use their judgment to determine the most appropriate intervention to help them, resulting in the growth of advanced practice nursing. Transition to practice regulations is the second barrier that hinders progress in advanced nursing. Based on the practice transition policies, new APRNs must practice under the mentorship or supervision of a skilled healthcare provider such as a physician. In recent years, practice transition requirements are more prevalent in the healthcare system. Such requirements are inconsistent with the Consensus Model of APRNs and vary considerably. The transition period ranges from about 750 hours to some years of monitored practice (Kleinpell et al., 2022). Major institutions such as IoM, AACN, ANA, and AANP oppose the transition to practice requirements. The requirements limit the optimal performance of the APRNs. The barrier can be addressed by allowing the APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education.
