Nursing metaparadigm and theories have evolved since the establishment of the discipline of nursing by Florence Nightingale. Historically, the nursing profession has extensively relied on interdisciplinary theories to show the interconnected nature of health, environment, patient and nursing. Bender and Feldman (2015) argue that nurses must have a strong scientific knowledge base from nursing and other disciplines such as behavioral social and physical science to practice in today’s healthcare systems. Interdisciplinary theories have proven useful in helping nurses understand the metaparadigm of nursing in the rapidly changing modern environment. According to Dossey, Keegan & Barrere (2016), interdisciplinary theories have impacted metaparadigm of nurses by integrating insight and knowledge from all human disciplines holistically. Each discipline has its unique sets of competencies, but they are interconnected with each other. Cordon (2013) contends that epistemological perspectives derived from different fields help nurses view clinical problems or patient needs from multiple dimensions to promote their health and well-being. Socialization and education that occur in different disciplines help nurses to view nursing as a complex system with interrelated components which in turn ensure that they address all aspects of the patient care needs.
