Leadership Course Wrap-up
My observations of the course’s learning activities, discussion questions, and assignments are that nurse leaders working as part of an interdisciplinary team have a chance to transform health care. An interdisciplinary team comprises members from different occupations with specialized knowledge, skills, and practices (Alligood, 2013). Professional nurses apply the critical thinking theory to meet health needs of patients with a specialist, generalist or independent practice role. They assume the role of a leader, caregiver, researcher, consultant, manager, counselor or researcher (Alligood, 2013). In collaboration with the interdisciplinary members, professional nurses can take part in not only providing healthcare but also increases the complexity of health care, keeping themselves abreast with the demands of new technology and responding to different issues from patients (Alligood, 2013). In addition, interdisciplinary teams have proven to improve the quality of health care systems while lowering cost of treating various chronic conditions.
Case management is more than just a mode of nursing. It can also be a process of coordinating various activities, such as accounting for conditioning care for patients or a group of patients, facilitating achievement of quality results and creating systems that enhance outcomes. Case management was designed to be clinical. The model assumes that caregivers or professional nurses need to have better care management tools, better management skills and responsible administrative support (Potter, Perry, Stockert & Hall, 2016). Furthermore, critical paths have incorporated into CareMaps that are normally used for nursing care planning. All these are meant to produce quality patient results in a new cost-conscious milieu.
Based on the readings and assignments for this course, I have determined that a problem becomes an ethical one when issues, such as core values or basic obligations, are present. An ethical dilemma comes about when obligations require an individual to adopt or choose two or more alternative actions, but the individual cannot undertake all the required alternatives (Potter et al., 2016). Ethical or moral dilemmas that come about in a health care environment tend to be interdisciplinary in nature. Issues that may affect an interdisciplinary include end of life decision-making, confidentiality, refusal of treatment and cost containment (Potter et al., 2016). At some point, ethical decision-making frameworks can lead to an interdisciplinary conflict (Alligood, 2013). Consequently, there arises a need to incorporate various ethical decision-making models into clinical models, applying skilled communication when it comes to ethical issues, recognizing and managing moral distress individually and in others.
In the current delivery care system, the complexity of ethical issues for nurse practitioners and the inability to arrive at a certain agreement among parties has led to individuals resorting to the legal system for resolution. In addition, social issues relating to ongoing cost containment pressures when delivering health care have greatly affected the current delivery care system (Potter et al., 2016). However, these political and social issues should n...
