Nursing is an area of study that strongly employs a mixed method of doing research. This methodology encompasses research that involves both quantitative and qualitative tools to examine a particular matter. The use of this approach in nursing promotes an insightful and wider understanding of the nursing situation. The application of mixed methodology in nursing is vital and offers a variety of benefits to the research process.
Just like in any other research, identifying the study question in nursing is also challenging, but mixed method is appropriate for achieving this objective. According to Shorten and Smith (2017), recognizing the research question through either qualitative or quantitative tools might not be accurate. It has been observed that some research questions cannot be identified when either qualitative or quantitative methodologies is applied (Shorten & Smith, 2017). Mixed method is found to be accurate and reliable in finding research questions that are not visible when a single method is utilized (Shorten & Smith, 2017) Therefore, nursing research that aims to have an accurate understanding of a phenomenon should employ mixed method as a tool for identifying the study question.
