POLITICAL DISCOURSE: USE OF LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE SPECIFIC
Politicians are well-known for their manipulating language they use depending on the context, the audience, topic, and the intention. Their languages are laced with satire, use of figurative language, and stylistics. What matters is how the message is sent and whether or not it serves its purpose. As a result, through the contextual language use, the politicians manage to create counter- spaces for the sake of developing and influencing public consensus, to make legitimate their powers and social control, orient functions to their favor or the favor of the people they represent. However, based on the role the language created is meant to serve, the political language will always change and used manipulatively and cleverly to suit the politicians' ambitions. Taking an example of political setting and period when Thailand’s Prime Minister was delivering a speech “Returning happiness to the people”. The language used by the prime minister illuminated what underlies a political language because of the use of multimodality, rhetoric, and stylistics.
