Effects of Divorce on Children
In the current society, marriage disruptions and divorce rates are increasing rapidly. According to a recent study published by the National Center for Health Statistics (2021), almost fifty-percent of newly married couples often end up in a divorce, with the statistics being even higher for subsequent marriages. Consequently, divorce results in significant stressors to not only couples but also children. Moreover, it causes profound poor academic performance, social, psychological, and emotional trauma (Ardi, Zadrian, and Maizura, 2018). Also, such children face an increased risk for poor health, smoking, alcohol consumption, and reduced physical exercises. This paper explores the effects of parental discord, particularly on children.
First, divorce results in psychological trauma in children. As the marriage system breaks apart and parents separate, the children are faced with numerous uncertainties and anxieties. Reduced contact disrupts the existing bond between the child and the parent, most commonly the father. Exposure of children to this kind of family upheaval forces them to persevere a malignant augmentation of external and internal conflicts such as overwhelming stress, insomnia, flashbacks, and mental exhaustion (Ardi et al., 2018; Fischel-Wolovick, 2018). Eventually, traumatized children may become pronouncedly affected when trauma symptoms fail to resolve, leading to utter loss of hope, low self-esteem, marked chasm, acute depression, and ultimately, suicidality.
Furthermore, children may perform poorly in their studies. Children in divorced families are more likely to develop poor cognition. Undoubtedly, divorce is tough on children. During marital breakups, the children are forced to choose sides, move, and endure overt hostility between former partners. As a result, the toxic and chronic exposure to marital conflicts takes a toll on their mental health and cognition. Ultimately, they fail to concentrate on their studies. According to Laila (2018), children from divorced homes often face substantial mental pressure, which can take a toll on their academic performance graph.
