Learning Power: Analysis on the Myth of Education and Empowerment (pp. 99-105)
The myth of education and empowerment is the perception by the American about the power of education to transform individual lives and give equality to all students. This is a false belief because education has made people less independent, they rely on employment instead of getting skills to develop talents and individual capabilities. During the colonial rule in the US education was not valued. Teachers were disregarded and education was used to advance spiritual needs such as reading the bible. It was viewed as a tool to promote discipline, order and control in the society. However this changed after the revolutionary war, American started to view education as the engine for empowerment, it help one to improve their skills, to better themselves and to offer equality.
Education became the unifying factor for millions of US citizens from former colonies. By taking them to school, it moulds them into loyal and patriotic citizen. It also helps to bring unity with the immigrant who was seen as posing threat to American security and to preserve the cultural identity of the US. To the government education was more useful to the State than to the individual and therefore need for program to help poor student get to school, the need for human capital to drive industrialization persuaded the American to get professional skills to run modern industries. Education was also seen as a tool for promotion of democracy, equality and self-improvement. It helps to think critically, make independent judgement, and develop talent and growth to individual and society.
