The selected artworks are the following in chronological order:
1 The Stela Altar at Amarna, Nefertiti & Akhenaten
This limestone altar depicts Pharaoh Akhenaten with his wife, Nefertiti, and their children. Apart from the social status of the family, this relief provides important information on female clothing and jewelry of the Egyptian time. It is dated from the 18th Dynasty (1,550-1,292 BCE) and it is currently exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
2 The Mosaic of Empress Theodora, San Vitale, Ravenna
The mosaic is located in the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna. The construction of this church and its internal decorations was one of the major architectural projects the Emperor Justinian undertook in the western territories of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century. Theodora’s figure is the pinnacle of Byzantine fashion and jewelry imported in the Empire.
