Discuss how ethnogenetic Layering and natural selection influence genetic variationsource..
Ethnogenetic layering (Jackson & Hardin, 2011) is an approach that has been used to explain and understand the role played by population sub structuring, in identifying and assessing risks underlying health disparities. Population sub structuring involves analyzing the genetic, cultural and non-genetic biological aspects of a population. Ethnogenetic layering recognizes that in any area of the world, different ethnic groups have settled sequentially rather than simultaneously and have continued to interact over time. Ethnogenetic layering is based on ethnogenetics which establishes population genetics and ethnicity are intertwined but not overlapping identities. The process of ethnogenetic layering involves identification of key historical, cultural and behavioral characteristics over a geographical area and then superimposing on the depictions, the geographical distribution of specific genes, gene clusters and health outcomes.
