Heart defects are a significant health concern for all individuals irrespective of their age in the 21st century. As researched by Pasupathy et al., In the United States (U.S.A), one out of every four persons has a heart problem, with the rate being higher in the older populations, although youth and children cases are prevalent (2019). Among newborns, an approximate 10 in every 100 have the defects (Pasupathy, Denbow & Rutherford, 2019). Categories of the heart problems range from arrhythmia, dilated cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular disease, heart failure, pulmonary stenosis, myocardial infarction, coronary heart diseases to mitral valve prolapse (Roth & Gotter, 2020). Heart problems result from diverse factors, including genetic conditions, unhealthy lifestyle, and stress.
Genetic causes of heart defects are most notable in newborn babies, with the mother, in most cases, contributing to the disease. Studies have revealed a link between genetic causes of cardiac complications in babies with environmental factors such as exposure of the mother to drugs and alcohol during pregnancy. Health conditions of mothers, such as diabetes and obesity, accelerate the risk of the unborn child suffering from cardiac diseases (Pasupathy, Denbow & Rutherford, 2019).
