Pathophysiology is a branch of medical science that deals with the functions of the body organs and manifestation of diseases of the body organs, with the aim of proper diagnosis and care of the patient. It comprises a sequence of steps that assist to guide doctors and nurses to test, diagnose and treat a disease. In pathophysiology healthcare professionals learn on;
The causes of genetic, congenital and acquired diseases are studied. Genetic diseases arise due to gene mutations that are passed on from the parents to the off-springs during sexual reproduction. A person incurs acquired disease after birth. Acquired diseases are spread through environmental factors such as air and water, micro-organisms such as protozoa and bacteria, or when people come in contact with a sick individual. Congenital disease occurs when complications occur at the uterus during the period of conception and birth, causing abnormalities.
Signs and symptoms of a disease: According to Mayet and Huges “ A symptom is any subjective evidence of a disease, while a sign is any objective evidence of disease. Therefore, a symptom is a phenomenon that is experienced by the individual affected by the disease while a sign is a phenomenon that can be detected by someone other than the individual affected by the disease”
* Investigation and diagnosis: When a sick person present, with signs and symptoms, doctors and nurses identify the nature and cause of the illness. Investigations done vary from urine test to x-ray examinations. The illness can be diagnosed after getting the main cause of signs and symptoms from the investigations done.
