Introduction
The livestock industry is one of the valuable industries which has received numerous support from the government and has an annual net worth of $800. The industry has been known to support many people in the rural area as well as regional Australia (Petherick, 2005). Australia has been branded as the global leader in welfare practices which revolve around animals, and there are strict measures put in place for any cruelty against the animals or actions that may compromise the well being (Petherick, 2005). Through the involvement of the region in livestock trades places the country at a suitable condition to influence laws of the importing countries against animals. The import of live animals has become a contentious issue in the region owing to the image put in place, competition as well as a political influence both in Australia as well as importing countries.
Over 2.6 million animals from Australia are imported annually to over 60 countries. However, the industry has been under scrutiny from the public as well as government institution since 1985 (Australia, 2019). The center of the debate revolves around determining who should be the primary stakeholders for the trade, animals as well as their welfare. From research, it is evident that the long journeys through ships remain stressful to cattle which can go up to three weeks (Tonsor & Schroeder, 2006). Such trips have been attributed to the development of diseases such as pulmonary inflation caused by the build-up of the urine in the shipments as well as the irritation of the mucosal cavity (Swift, 2014). However, live animal export should be approved owing to the vast amount of revenue that is brought to the country.
