ORGANISATIONAL SURVIVAL STRATEGIES
The present day economic environment has madeit very important for organisations to take various measures to ensure their survival. This is especially so in the Health care field where competation is stiff. There are various startegies that a health care organization can implement in order to survive the prevailing harsh economic times. This paper will discuss three strategies namely; co-optation, goal multiplication and expansion and finally Bureaucratic imperialism.
The first strategy is co-optation. This is a strategy that involves adapting and responding to changes in the organiasation’s external environment (Joan and Charles 1984 Pg 17). To respond to the changes, the organization would introduce new services to the ,market in order to maintain the profit margin. At the same time, sevices that are no longer profitably vialbe will be done away with to reduce the operational cost.Selzinick (Pg 13, 1966) summarize co-optattion as the realistic adjustment of the centers of the organizational strength.
The second startegyy is goal multiplication and expansion. This is the process by which the organisation’s goals and objectives are modififed. The modification is done in such a way as to have a positive impact in the organization. In goal multiplication, the organization will retain the old goals already set while at the same time setting new goals to be achieved in the near future. This will help the organization to measure its performance by achieving these goals. Goal expansion on the other hand involves retaining the old goals but adding variations as the prevailing conditions will dictate.
In the final strategy, that is Bureaucratic imperialism, the organization will focus on gaining a competitive edge over the competitors so as to retain its clients as well as attracting new ones from the competitors. To gain a competitive edge,...
