It is clear that Dave barry’s Fright School instructor included planet earth in his list of dangerous areas when he cited that to avoid the threats one should remain alert, use common sense, be inconspicuous, and avoid dangerous areas like the planet earth. He is exaggerating that the earth is a dangerous place to be, since not all the areas on earth are dangerous and one may ask where else can we be if not on earth. He is reporting from Miami, a hostile environment where he has lived for the past twenty years.
The stated survival tips emphasize on remaining alert and using common sense. One is advised to be inconspicuous in case of encountering a danger. The survival tips include carrying very essential items in a hostile environment like water, food, protective eyewear, protective headgear, whistle, escape rope and a first aid kit. He chose these survival tips as they are the most essential in case of any danger since they may prevent the journalists from injuries and possible deaths.
Barry’s instructor did not go more deeply into the specific threats in order not to frighten Barry and his fellow journalists. This could have led to most of the avoiding the job or even relying on personal assumptions which is not good in a hostile environment.

Barry’s main purpose in writing this column is to show what he learned and how inadequate the training was. This is shown by the fact that the instructor was ending roughly in every fourth sentence and due to the fact that the training did not tackle all the survival tips. Some tips were just mentioned to them like the first aid. He is also aiming at entertaining reader. This is clearly indicated by his exaggeration that planet earth should be avoided and also when he talks of cargo pants.
